Michael Maggi [ ˈmadʒi ] (born September 29, 1807 in Monza ; † 1881 ) was an Italian immigrant in Switzerland . His son Julius Maggi founded the Maggi factory in Kemptthal, Zurich .

Life

Michael Maggi comes from the Lombard city ​​of Monza and came to Switzerland as a political refugee in 1828, where he received the citizenship of Affoltern . A street there is named after him today. In 1839 he bought the Neumühle in Frauenfeld and in 1856 acquired the bleaching meadows near the mill, including the water rights. In 1861 Michael Maggi bought the hammer mill in Kemptthal, Zurich. In 1867 his successors sold the mill in Frauenfeld to Martini, Tanner & Cie. and moved the company headquarters to Kemptthal.

Michael Maggi married Sophie Esslinger, daughter of the Zurich Grand Councilor Johannes Esslinger , on May 30, 1839 . She brought a three-year-old son into the marriage. Together they had five children, of whom the only son Julius Michael Johannes Maggi, born on October 9, 1846 in Frauenfeld, became well known. In 1869 he took over the hammer mill in Kemptthal, was able to expand the business and thus bring the Maggi works into being.
