Michael Nava

Michael Nava (born September 16, 1954 in Stockton , CA , USA ) is an American lawyer and writer .

life and work

Nava was born in the small town of Stockton in San Joaquin County near San Francisco and grew up in Sacramento . In 1981 he received his law degree from Stanford University , where he had met his partner, Bill Weinberger, the year before . The two initially ran a joint law firm in Palo Alto until they relocated to Los Angeles in 1984 .

In 1986 he published his first novel under the title The little death (German: Der kleine Tod ). After seven volumes, the novel cycle around the gay lawyer Henry Rios was completed in 2001. Nava has been practicing in San Francisco since 1995 . There he not only works as a lawyer, but also fights publicly for recognition and equality of homosexuals in the USA.

Nava received the Lambda Literary Award for five of his novels :

  • 1989 for Goldenboy in the categories Gay men's Mystery / Science Fiction and Gay men's Small Press Book Award
  • 1991 for Howtown in the category Gay men's mystery
  • 1993 for The Hidden Law in the category Gay men's mystery
  • 1997 for Death of Friends in the category Gay men's mystery
  • 2002 for Rag and Bone in the Gay men's mystery category

All novels were translated into German and published by Argument Verlag in Hamburg .
