Michael Franz Reinhold Popović (born August 23, 1947 in Fulda ) is a German doctor , specialist in general medicine, medical professional politician, journalist and genealogist.

Life

After graduating from the Alexander von Humboldt-Gymnasium in Lauterbach (Upper Hesse) in 1966 and completing military service in 1967 and 1968, Popović studied psychology and then medicine at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen from 1969 to 1975 . In 1975 he passed the state examination and in 1976 his license to practice medicine . In 1979 he received his doctorate under Hans-Werner Pia , the medical director of the Neurosurgical University Clinic in Giessen, and worked in the clinic in Giessen until 1981.

From 1982 to 1986 he was the managing doctor and department head of the German Medical Association . In 1986 he went to the State Medical Association of Hesse as a managing doctor . From 1987 to 2010 he worked full-time as managing director and managing doctor.

Popovic has been working as a consultant in the transformation process of the Czech health care system since 1990 and was involved in the establishment of medical professional chambers on a legal basis, the development of a social insurance system and the reorganization of medical-scientific research funding. Popović also assisted in setting up the Czech Medical Association, which was founded in 1991. At the same time, he supported the development of the Thuringian Health Professions Act and the establishment of the Thuringian Medical Association.

As a result of completed service in the Bundeswehr in 1990, he was promoted to senior doctor in the reserve.

From 2003 to 2011 he was a lecturer at the Medical Faculty of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .

Focus of work

Popović was significantly involved in the development of the Hessian geriatric concept and played a decisive role in the development of palliative medical care in Hesse. Until 2009, Popović was head of the committee and the permanent conference of palliative medicine in the State Medical Association of Hesse. He campaigned for comprehensive palliative care, organized specialist conferences for the exchange of ideas and ideas and worked on a curriculum for the qualification of doctors, geriatric nurses and nurses. Other focal points of his professional commitment were the improvement of the logistics and quality of nationwide care, the working conditions of the medical staff, migration and health, emergency and disaster medicine and risk management. In addition, he was a member of the Expert Commission for Crime Prevention. He helped to sensitize paediatricians to questions of violence prevention and in particular to the detection of domestic violence. Since 2010 Popović has been concerned with genealogy and cultural history, especially in Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Austria-Hungary. He is the first secretary of the Association of Sudeten German Family Researchers (VSFF) and editor of the association's journal "Sudetendeutsche Familienforschung".

Private

Michael Popović's father was the businessman and successful racing rower Paul Popović from Leitmeritz ad Elbe (Litoměřice nL). His mother Ilse, b. Pfeifer, came from a north Bohemian family of textile industrialists. Michael Popović is married to the doctor Dr. Ursula Schreiber-Popović. He has five children.
