Michael Schmidtsdorff

Michael Schmidtsdorff (* 1970 in Hamburg ) is a German conductor .

Career

Schmidtsdorff studied conducting from 1990 to 1998 at the music academies in Hamburg and Vienna. Klauspeter Seibel and Leopold Hager were among his teachers . From 1992 to 1996 he directed the Harvestehude Symphony Orchestra Hamburg . In 1997 he became Second Kapellmeister at the Theater Lüneburg , where he rose to First Kapellmeister and Deputy Music Director in 2001.

Within Germany, engagements have taken him to the Hamburg State Opera (since 1998), the Semperoper Dresden (since 2002), the Berlin State Opera (since 2005), the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Bavarian State Opera (both since 2006). In addition, he directs ballet productions in his own production at the Opéra National de Paris (since 2006), the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen (since 2012) and at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo (since 2015). Guest performances led him a. a. to the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, to Japanese theaters in Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka, to the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and to San Francisco and Muscat (Oman). His repertoire includes great ballet compositions and extends equally to opera and symphonic music.
