Michael Schratz

Michael Schratz (born January 25, 1952 in Graz ) is an Austrian educationalist, school educator and professor at the Leopold Franzens University in Innsbruck .

After studying English / American and physical education for teaching at grammar schools (1976) and secondary schools (1979), Schratz obtained a doctorate in educational sciences and psychology (1979). As a research assistant at the Institute for Educational Science at the Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck , he completed his habilitation (General and Special Didactics) in 1984. After lengthy stays abroad ( Bristol / GB, Hanover / D, San Diego / USA, Geelong / AUS) and visiting professorships ( Klagenfurt , Schlaining) ) he was appointed university professor for school education at the Institute for Teacher Education and School Research at the University of Innsbruck. He headed the institute until he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Education in 2008. His research areas are school and learning research, especially concepts for the professionalization of leaders in the education sector and for the development of schools and teaching. It deals with the quality development of education systems as well as the reform of teacher training. One focus of his research interests lies in the “learning-side” orientation of teaching (leadership for learning). Schratz is a founding co-editor of several specialist journals (Journal for School Development, Learning School, Journal for Teacher Education). In 2011 he was awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa by the University of Bucharest.

  • Scientific director of the "Leadership Academy", an Austria-wide initiative of the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture for system development in education (according to m. W. Schley).
  • Representative of the European Commission in the Teacher Working Group at the European Union.
  • Austrian representative in the "European Network for Teacher Education Policies (ENTEP)".
  • Project leader of the research project Personal Education Processes in Heterogeneous Groups of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF) .
  • Member of the jury of the German School Prize of the Robert Bosch Foundation , the Heidehof Foundation , Stern and ZDF, their spokesman since 2010.
  • Development support of the school reform model New Middle School for the redesign of the lower secondary level in Austria (according to m. W. Schley).
  • Head of the Austrian sub-study of "Educational Policy Cultures in Parliamentary Systems"
  • National project leader of the Central European educational cooperation in the LLL project of the EU International Cooperation for School Leadership (ICSL) with the Tempus Public Foundation in Budapest.
