Michael Schulte-Markwort (born September 14, 1956 in Osnabrück ) is a German child and youth psychiatrist and university professor. Schulte-Markwort is particularly known for his work on exhaustion depression ( burnout syndrome ) in children and adolescents.

Life

Schulte-Markwort studied human medicine and philosophy at the Philipps University in Marburg and the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . After receiving his license to practice medicine in 1987, he initially worked as an assistant at the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical University of Lübeck . In 1991 he received his doctorate magna cum laude from the Medical Faculty of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. After being recognized as a doctor for child and adolescent psychiatry in 1992, he was senior physician at the clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry at the Medical University of Lübeck until 1996. In 1997 he qualified as a professor and accepted a professorship for child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Hamburg. In 2004 he was appointed to the chair for child and adolescent psychosomatics at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. From 2006 to 2010 he was chief physician of the department for child and adolescent psychosomatics and from 2010 to 2011 member of the clinic management of the Seeparkklinik Bad Bodenteich. From 2012 to 2013 he was acting chief physician at the day clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry at the Itzehoe Clinic .

Since 2004, Schulte-Markwort has been the senior doctor in the department for child and adolescent psychosomatics at the Altona Children's Hospital . Since 2010 he has been medical director of the clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatics at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and since 2014 medical director of the Center for Psychosocial Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.

Scientific contribution

Schulte-Markwort's scientific contribution can be broken down into three main areas: dealing with psychosomatic illnesses in childhood and adolescence, recording epidemiological facts on the prevalence of child and adolescent psychiatric illnesses, and finally an investigation into the influence of different lighting conditions on learning success and social behavior of school children.

Memberships in scientific associations

Schulte-Markwort was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board on Psychotherapy of the German Medical Association from 2004 to 2008 . He was President of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (2006–2007) and a member of the Medicines for Children Commission of the Federal Ministry of Health (2007–2008).

Schulte-Markwort is currently active in various foundations, including as Chairman of the Mediziner-Siegel Foundation (since 2010), as a member of the Board of Directors of the Children for Tomorrow Foundation (since 2010) and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kulturglück Foundation (since 2014). Schulte-Markwort also brings his scientific expertise as a consultant to the advisory board of the League for the Child , Hamburg Makes Children Healthy , the Itzehoe Clinic and the Social Association of Germany . He has also been active on the scientific advisory board since 2005 in the journal for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy and since 2014 in the monthly paediatrics .
