Michael Thaut

Michael Hugo Thaut (* 1952 in Mannheim ) is dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Colorado State University and holds two chairs . He was awarded a professorship for music and another for neuroscience . Michael Thaut is also known in German-speaking countries as a co-founder of the Deutschfolk group Fiedel Michel .

Life

Michael Thaut spent his childhood and youth as the son of the Baptist theologian Rudolf Thaut in Mannheim, Munich , Bad Homburg and Hamburg . After graduating from high school , he studied education at the University of Münster from 1972 to 1976 and then studied music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg .

During his studies in 1973 Thaut founded the folk band Fiedel Michel together with Thomas Kagermann and Martin Hannemann . The band had their first public appearance in the summer of the same year. In the period that followed, the trio released numerous long-playing records and developed into one of the most important bands in this genre. In 1981 the Michel fiddle broke up . In addition to his musical engagement in the folk field, Thaut also worked as a professional violinist in various chamber music ensembles.

After 1981 Michael Thaut went to the United States and initially worked as a music therapist. He graduated from Michigan State University and then obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Music . Today he is Professor of Music and Professor of Neuroscience at Colorado State University . Since 2001 he has also been the co-director of the affiliated School of Arts and is chairman of the music, theater and dance department .

Awards (selection)

Thaut received from the American Association for Music Therapy ( American Music Therapy Association ) 1993 National Research Award and the 2001 National Service Award . The Japanese Kurashiki Sakuyo Music University appointed him an honorary professor in 2010. This professorship is also provided with a temporary teaching assignment.
