Michael Theobald

Michael Theobald (born March 7, 1948 in Cologne ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian specializing in the New Testament .

Education and university career

Theobald studied Roman Catholic theology at the University of Bonn and at the University of Münster . After receiving his doctorate in Bonn in 1979 and his habilitation in 1985 in Regensburg , Theobald was Professor of Biblical Theology at the Free University of Berlin from 1985 to 1989 . Theobald has been Professor of New Testament at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen since 1989 ; In 2016 he retired. He is one of the signatories of the Church 2011 memorandum  : A necessary departure .

Research priorities

His work focuses on the Gospel of John and the New Testament letter literature (Romans, Ephesians , Hebrews , pastoral letters ). He was one of the editors of the new standard translation of the Bible presented in September 2016 . Theobald is also a member of the National Academy Leopoldina Halle , the Theology College of the DFG , the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), the Societas Novi Testamenti (SNTS) and the Working Group of German-Speaking New Testament Scholars (AGNT). From 2009 to 2019 Theobald was chairman of the Katholisches Bibelwerk Stuttgart eV

Together with his brother Christoph Theobald , he was awarded the Theological Prize of the Salzburg University Weeks in 2014.
