Mikhail Dmitrievich Galanin ( Russian Михаил Дмитриевич Галанин , English transcription Mikhail Dmitrievich Galanin; born January 25, jul. / 7. February  1915 greg. In Moscow , † 3. May 2008 ) was a Russian physicist who for luminescence and nonlinear optics worked.

Life

Galanin studied at the Faculty of Physics at Lomonosov University in Moscow until 1938 and then went to the Lebedev Institute (FIAN) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1939 he was drafted into the Red Army , where he served until the end of the Second World War, most recently with the rank of lieutenant. After the end of the war he returned to the Lebedev Institute and became an aspirant with Sergei Wawilow , where he began his work on luminescence. In 1956 he obtained his Russian doctorate for a thesis on resonance energy transfer in luminescent solutions. From 1963 to 1988 he headed the luminescence laboratory of the Lebedev Institute. From 1948 he also worked at the MIPT in Moscow. Since 1969 he held the chair for quantum electronics .

Galanin dealt with many fundamental questions about luminescence in condensed matter . His contributions to the understanding of Förster resonance energy and Dexter energy transfer should be emphasized . With the development of quantum electronics in the early 1960s, he turned to the use of lasers for his research on luminescence. With his work group, he developed the first ruby laser in the USSR in 1961 . He published his research results in more than 100 publications, including two monographs.

The Academy of Sciences of the USSR awarded him the S. I. Wawilow gold medal in 1976 and the Lebedev gold medal in 2001 . In December 1984 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences.
