Michail Koronatowitsch Bachirew ( Russian Михаил Коронатович Бахирев , scientific transliteration Michail Koronatovič Bachirev ; born July 17, 1868 in Novocherkassk ; † January 16, 1920 in Petrograd ) was a Russian naval officer and admiral .

Life

He joined the Navy as a cadet in 1888 and was first sergeant and later helmsman on the gunboat Bobr of the Far East Fleet . In January 1898 he was transferred to the Baltic Fleet , only to be commanded back to the Far East the following year. During the Boxer Rebellion , he commanded the gunboat Giljak . On June 17, 1900, he participated in the capture of the Taku forts . For this he received the Order of St. George 4th Class on October 19, 1900. He was then transferred to the armored cruiser Rossija until 1904 .

During the Russo-Japanese War 1904/05 he commanded the torpedo boat Silny in Port Arthur and was appointed captain of the 2nd rank . Afterwards service on various cruisers (so on the mine cruiser Abrek 1907 as commander) and destroyers and promotion to commander of the 5th Destroyer Division of the Baltic Fleet. From 1911 to 1914 he was in command of the largest and most powerful Russian cruiser, the Rurik . During the First World War , he initially commanded the 1st Cruiser Brigade of the Baltic Fleet in the Baltic Sea as Rear Admiral from 1914 to 1915 . With her he denied the battle of July 2 against German units (see Gotland Raid ). From December 19, 1915 to May 23, 1917 he took command of the 1st  Battleship Brigade , consisting of the modern ships Gangut , Petropavlovsk , Poltava and Sevastopol . He was promoted to Vice Admiral on December 6, 1916. On August 21, 1917 he became Commander in Chief of the Russian Armed Forces on the Gulf of Riga (see Operation Albion and Battle of Moon Sound ). He retired on January 18, 1918.

In connection with Yudenich's advance on Petrograd during the civil war , he was arrested by the Cheka on November 17, 1919 . He was shot dead on January 16, 1920 on charges of acting as a terrorist and being an agent for the Whites .
