Mikhail Gerasimowitsch Markow

Michail Gerasimowitsch Markow ( Russian Михаил Герасимович Марков; born July 17, 1938 in Moscow ; † May 5, 2012 ibid) was a cyclist from the Soviet Union and national cycling champion .

Athletic career

In 1959 Markov was the Soviet champion in the team time trial (including with Gainan Saidchushin ). He later turned to track cycling and specialized in standing races . His greatest international success was the second place in the final of the standing race of the amateurs at the UCI track world championships in 1967 behind Piet de Wit . Between 1966 and 1976 he was a total of eleven Soviet champions in the standing race and set a large number of Soviet records. While he was in the Red Army , Markow was stationed in the GDR for a few years . The Soviet army maintained an army sports club in Elstal near Berlin , the SASK Elstal , in which a group of racing cyclists trained, including Markow. He was given opportunities to start on the tracks of the GDR and won several standing races, including on the track of the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin.

Professional

In 1977 he ended his career and became a coach at CSKA Moscow .

He is the father of former cyclist Alexei Mikhailovich Markov .
