Michel Mazarin OP , actually Michele Mazzarino , (born September 1, 1605 in Pescina , † August 31, 1648 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Aix , Cardinal and Viceroy of Catalonia .

Life

Michele Mazzarino was the younger brother of the French Cardinal Minister Jules Mazarin (Giulion Mazzarino). He was born in Pescina in Abruzzo (according to other sources in Rome) in 1605 and baptized in the name of Alessandro . His father Pietro († November 14, 1654) was director of the goods of the Konnetabel Colonna; his mother, Ortensia Bufalini, was Konnetabel's goddaughter. Alessandro Mazzarino came in 1620 with the Order name Michele in the Order of Preachers one was Prior and finally General Magister in Rome. Since his election was not supported by the influential Spanish party, he resigned from the generalate and was compensated with the office of papal palace marshal.

In 1644 his brother got him the archbishop's chair of Aix-en-Provence and in 1647 also the cardinal's hat ( titular church Santa Cecilia in Trastevere ). Together with the architect Jean Lombard, Michele in Aix initiated the construction of the Quartier Mazarin , which was named after him. As a bishop, Mazzarini left little traces, but on August 10, 1647 laid the foundation stone for a new, larger bishop's residence. In 1648 his brother promoted him to viceroy in Catalonia, which office he held only briefly. He died on September 1, 1648 in Rome and was buried in the Dominican church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
