Michelangelo Amadei
Michelangelo Amadei (also Mich (a) ele Angelo Amadei ; * December 11, 1586 in Cortona ( Tuscany ); † March 12, 1642 ibid) was an Italian composer at the transition between the music of the Renaissance and that of the early Baroque .
life and work
Miachelangelo Amadei was born in Cortona in 1586, nothing is known about his family background. According to his own statements in the preface to his first book of motets, he was a student of Giovanni Bernardino Nanino , but he does not appear in the traditional lists of students at the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi (where Nanino taught). On August 27, 1606, the almost twenty-year-old Amadei was appointed maestro di cappella to the cathedral in his hometown of Cortona, where he remained active until his death. At the same time he held a canonical at the Church of Santa Maria Novella, also located in Cortona.
Amadei's works are only partially preserved. It is worth mentioning two volumes with motets , dedicated to the Bishop of Cortona and a Neapolitan nobleman, printed in Venice in 1614 and 1615 . The motets are composed for one to six voices with basso continuo on the organ. The first volume with 23 motets was reissued in 2013.
