Michelangelo Anselmi , even Michelangelo da Lucca , Michelangelo da Siena and lo Scalabrino , (* around 1491 / 92 likely in Lucca , † interlocutory 1554 and 1556 in Parma ) was an Italian painter and fresco painter.

life and work

Michelangelo Anselmi was the son of Antonio Anselmi. Around 1500 the family moved to Siena , where Anselmi learned the art of painting from Sodoma and Bartolomeo Neroni . He was first documented as a painter there in 1511. His early works show strong influences from Domenico Beccafumi and Baldassare Peruzzi . Around 1515 he moved to Parma, where he was mentioned in 1520 as a highly valued painter of frescoes and altarpieces. Here he falls under the spell of the art of Antonio da Correggio , with whom he worked in the cathedral.

After the brotherhood of the newly built Parma church of Santa Maria della Steccata withdrew the commission for the painting of the apse after several years of delay from the actually commissioned Parmigianino and Giulio Romano did not want to take on this commission because of its difficulty, Michelangelo Anselmi was hired, who also did it in 1541.

Michelangelo traveled to Venice for the first time in 1538 , in 1542 in Mantua and in 1544 in Siena again. Another stay in Venice followed in 1546, before he returned to Parma in 1547, where he carried out other important commissions and through Giulio Romano also came into contact with the art of Raphael and the incipient mannerism .

Michelangelo Anselmi is considered one of the most important successors of Correggio, who knew how to merge his style in a harmonious way with that of his Sienese models. His pictures are characterized by a solid structure with warm and bright colors.
