Mickey Thomas (born July 7, 1954 in Mochdre ) is a former Welsh football player . Thomas made 51 appearances for the national team of Wales in his career , in which he scored four goals.

Career

Mickey Thomas was one of the many players who came to England from North West Wales in the 1970s and 1980s. The then Quinton Hazell factory bought him a pair of soccer shoes so that at the age of 13 he could play as a winger on the company's men's team. When he was 15, he and his friend Joey Jones , who was a year younger than him, were sent to Wrexham FC . For the first two years they were involved in the club, cleaning shoes, cleaning the changing rooms and the entire stadium. Thomas finally made his debut in the 1971/72 season at the age of 17. Under John Neal , Wrexham FC managed to advance to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1974 . In 1976 they failed in the European championship at the eventual winner RSC Anderlecht from Belgium. After Wrexham FC became champions in the third division , Thomas moved to Manchester United . He played 110 games for the Red Devils, scoring 15 goals. In 1981 he moved to Everton FC for just three months . His contract was terminated by then coach Howard Kendall after Thomas refused to play for the reserve team. In January 1984 he moved to Chelsea , where he played under John Neal, his former coach at Wrexham. Thomas had a strong season and was a big contributor to the Football League Second Division win . In 1985 he was given to West Bromwich Albion for a transfer fee of 100,000 pounds . After his time at West Bromwich Albion, he played for other English clubs. He celebrated a great success in 1991 with Wrexham, his last professional position, when he scored the 2-1 winner with a free kick against Arsenal in the FA Cup . In 1993 he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for counterfeiting money. After his imprisonment he only played for lower class clubs such as FC Porthmadog and FC Amlwch Town before finally ending his career in 1995. Thomas is currently analyzing and commenting on Manchester United's games for radio stations Key 103 and Piccadilly Magic 1152 .
