Transdermal implant below the shoulder

A transdermal implant , also known as a transdermal , is an implant located below the surface of the skin to which jewelry can be attached using a small threaded rod that protrudes through the skin to the surface . Small variants of the transdermal are called microdermal . They represent a form of body modification .

Transdermals consist of a rod with an internal thread that is firmly connected to a small plate under the skin. The thread protrudes through the skin so that various attachments can be screwed onto it. The rod is usually three to six millimeters in diameter. Under the skin there is a plate made of titanium or steel , which provides support. Microdermal is a special form, which is very popular because of its small size and mostly easy healing.

Deploy

Insertion of transdermal implants

First of all, the area is usually numbed locally. An incision is then made with a scalpel . With a blunt tool, the modifier separates the skin layers and forms a tissue pocket. The hole for the rod is punched with a dermal punch and the implant is inserted. A short attachment is screwed on for the duration of the healing process. This healing phase is accompanied by swelling, discoloration of the skin and pain.

First, an opening must be made in the skin. This can be done with a needle, scalpel, or a biopsy punch . Then the jewelry is inserted and a skin pocket is formed with the plate. Usually a washer is then screwed onto the thread because it puts the least strain on the wound during the healing phase. The process of insertion is well tolerated by most and does not cause much pain.

Remove

Unlike piercings, Microdermal cannot be removed from the wearer by simply unscrewing it. Microdermal can usually be removed without reopening the skin, for this purpose it is "levered" out of the skin with a special removal tool or a screwed-in barbell piercing . In difficult cases, a 1–2 mm long, barely painful incision can be made using a scalpel. .

Special form microdermal

Microdermal (also known as "dermal anchors", "skin anchors", "skinplates") are special transdermals. Microdermal are characterized by their size and ease of insertion. The foot of a microdermal is about 2.5 × 7 millimeters in size. Microdermal usually only have one pin to attach the jewelry.

Risks

The risks are the same as with piercings . However, an infection could have greater consequences, so work must be done very cleanly. There are also cases known in which transdermal implants have worked their way through the skullcap due to tissue erosion. The placement obviously plays a big role. It may be advisable to remove or mask the jewelry during sports, depending on the type of sport.

distribution

Since their introduction in mid-2006, microdermal systems have experienced a real boom and more and more piercing studios are offering them.

In the early days, jewelry similar to nose studs was used. A loop under the skin should be waxed in to ensure hold. However, after initial experience with implants specially manufactured for this purpose, it became clear that better results would be achieved with them. Today there are already several manufacturers who manufacture and sell microdermal industrially.

Some women wear microdermal implants in their cleavage to replace or complement necklaces . Also in the face, e.g. B. as an optical extension of the eyes, and on the hands or fingers they are used regularly. Some complement existing piercings, e.g. B. in the navel and genital area , or are stung in groups. A popular use is the combination with (existing) tattoos , e.g. B. to represent eyes of human or animal motifs or to highlight central points of geometric figures.
