XNA ( X NA's N ot A cronymed , in German roughly XNA is not an abbreviation ) is a technology for game development for Windows , Xbox 360 , Microsoft's Zune MP3 player and Windows Phone 7 . XNA combines various game development programming interfaces , including Direct3D from DirectX Version 9.0c for the display of 2D and 3D graphics, XACT (Cross-platform Audio Creation Tool) as a cross-platform interface for outputting audio data and XInput for communication with everyone necessary peripheral devices in a common framework . This should enable a faster development process and counter the rising costs of game production. PC games can be used free of charge, while Xbox 360 requires an App Hub premium membership (formerly XNA Creators Club ).
The XNA Game Studio Express development environment is based on Visual C # Express and enables developers to develop software for both Windows and the Xbox 360. From version 2.0, XNA can be used together with every version of Visual Studio 2005 (including express versions). Version 2.0 is not compatible with Visual Studio 2008 . Version 3.0 also integrates with Visual Studio 2008, while version 4.0 supports Visual Studio 2010. With XNA version 3.1, many requests from the developer community were implemented. For example, the integration and playback of videos and XBox Party are now supported. In addition, it is now possible to integrate your own avatar into the game. This feature is limited to the Xbox 360. In addition, the functions of the Zune HD , i.e. touchscreen and sensors, were released by means of an additional package, the XNA Game Studio Zune Extensions .
With version 4.0, Windows Phone 7 was added as the target platform for the XNA framework, but support for the Zune was no longer available. The XNA Game Studio has since been available for download as part of the Windows Phone Developer Tools.
According to an email sent by Microsoft on January 31, 2013 regarding their MVP Award Program , XNA is no longer actively being developed. With the XNA framework, there is therefore neither the possibility of developing XNA applications in Windows 8 Modern UI design nor of developing applications for Windows RT .
In the meantime, however, several alternative open source implementations of the framework have emerged, which also enable the development of applications for platforms not originally supported in the XNA framework.
The further development of XNA has been stopped by Microsoft.

DreamBuildPlay
Microsoft organizes worldwide competitions for game development with XNA under the name DreamBuildPlay . Teams and individuals can take part in the competitions. In addition to large amounts of money, contracts for the publication of games in the context of the Xbox Live Arcade Games are also awarded as prizes.
Alternative implementations
A project called Mono.XNA was started in 2009 with the aim of developing an alternative open source implementation that is platform-independent. The project has since been discontinued.
However, the MonoGame project was created based on the code base of Mono.XNA and SilverSprite. The aim of this project is to provide XNA on alternative (mobile) platforms. Support is currently available for Windows ( OpenGL ), Windows Store Apps (for Windows 8 and Windows RT ), Windows Phone , macOS , iOS , Linux , Android and the open source game console Ouya . There is also limited support (2D only) for the PlayStation Mobile .
The ANX.Framework also offers an alternative, independent open source implementation of the XNA framework using SharpDX and OpenTK . ANX is also platform-independent and supports Windows , Linux , macOS , Android , iOS , PlayStation Mobile and Windows 8 Modern UI design.
