Midnight Movie is an American slasher film directed by Jack Messitt from 2008.

As a last resort in therapy, Tad Redford, a former horror film director who has identified too much with his film killer , sees his own film The Dark Beneath , as a kind of shock therapy. A short time later everyone in the psychiatric hospital is dead and the ex-director has disappeared. The only survivor is Dr. Wayne. The investigation is conducted by Detective Barrons.

Five years later: A small suburban cinema shows The Dark Beneath as the Midnight Movie . Dr. Wayne and Detective Ward decide to see the film, suspecting Radford won't miss the opportunity. Also present are the rocker Harley and his bride, as well as Bridget, who was badly abused by her father as a child, her boyfriend Josh and a few friends. Timmy, Bridget's little brother, is hiding in the cinema. The black-and-white film, in which a masked killer is the villain with a corkscrew-like tool, begins without major incidents until two employees of the cinema suddenly disappear and appear in the film. One of the friends goes to the bathroom and is stabbed by the killer. Only now do the viewers realize that something is wrong. It quickly becomes clear that the film killer has come to life and threatens the group. They try to escape first, but all doors are locked. The seemingly invincible killer takes one at a time. The remaining members get the idea to destroy the projector, but it reassembles itself.

In the end, only Bridget and Tommy remain. Having found out that the only way to act fear is the pair use the tricks they used on their abusive father to survive. Bridget prays out loud as Timmy enumerates baseball players . Unfortunately this doesn't work either and the killer strikes. The two end up in the film. Bridget manages to free her brother, she wants to leave the house with him. She kills the killer's mother and seriously injures the killer himself. Just as they get outside and continue to flee from the killer, the credits begin. With the last of his strength Bridget throws Tommy out of the film.

According to the information on the DVD release, the film should also show the development of the horror film since its creation. Therefore, the first murders in the film were staged rather subtly, while the later murders are portrayed more explicitly. Further reminiscences of the modern horror film were incorporated in many ways. So the plot of the black and white film is a mixture of Blood Court in Texas , The Last House on the Left and Psycho . The mask was inspired by the skull on a poster from Dance of the Devils II - Now There's More Dancing (upper half) and The Silence of the Lambs (lower half). With the murder tool, a razor-sharp, large corkscrew, an attempt was made to break new ground. On Soundtrack participated grain and Shadow Play.

The film was released in two versions in Germany. The uncut version was approved by the SPIO / JK with the approval of no serious risk to young people and placed on the list of media harmful to young people by the BPjM in November 2009 . An 18 version cut by two minutes was released in the same year.

Midnight Movie won the Jury Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Feature Film at the 2008 Chicago Horror Film Festival .
