Mieczysław Porębski
Mieczysław Porębski (born March 31, 1921 in Gnesen , † September 10, 2012 in Warsaw ) was a Polish art historian . He mainly dealt with the art of the 19th and 20th centuries and art theory .
Life
Porębski began his history studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków in 1938 , which he had to interrupt because of the Second World War . During the German occupation of Poland , he attended the arts and crafts school and worked with Tadeusz Kantor's theater . Because of his conspiratorial activities, he was interned in 1944 first in the Groß-Rosen concentration camp and then in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp . After the war he was able to return to Poland and finish his studies. He moved to Warsaw, where he worked at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1969lectured. He was also editor-in-chief of the Przegląd Artystyczny magazine from 1952 to 1957 . He returned to Krakow in 1970, where he took over the Chair of the History of Modern Art at the Jagiellonian University. In 1974 he also became curator of the National Museum in Krakow . From 1990 he was a member of the Polska Akademia Umiejętności .
