The Mieczyslaw Kalinowski was built under construction number 651 at the Stocznia Gdańska shipyard ("Lenin shipyard") in Danzig. The launch took place on August 18, 1973. On December 31 of the same year, the ship was handed over to the Polskie Linie Oceaniczne (PLO). The ship was named after the Polish political officer and soldier of the Second World War , Mieczyslaw Kalinowski (1907–1943). It was the second container ship built in Poland . In 1991 the ship was renamed Ocean Regina and in 1992 Ocean Trader .
Accident on December 19, 1975
On December 19, 1975, the Mieczyslaw Kalinowski collided with the cargo ship Wiedau on the Elbe in heavy fog from the sea . The force of the collision pushed the bow of the Wiedau in the direction of the Uwe inland vessel , which was driven over by the Wiedau and separated into two parts.

The Mieczyslaw Kalinowski was a semi-container ship that could load containers and general cargo at the same time. It was measured with 10,116 GRT or 5640 NRT . With a length of 161.0 meters, a width of 22.9 meters and a draft of 9.7 meters, she had a deadweight limit of 11,684 tons. Its propulsion system consisted of a six-cylinder Sulzer Cegielski - Diesel engine of the type 6RD90 with a capacity of 17,400 hp. She could reach a speed of 21 knots and was considered a fast freighter . Her loading gear included a 60-ton cambered heavy-lift tree .
