Accident on the Elbe

On December 19, 1975, the inland vessel Uwe sailed down the Elbe with a load of copper slag . There was thick fog when the cargo ship Wiedau passed it. 17:03 the oncoming cargo ship appeared Mieczyslaw Kalinowski at the height of Wittenbergen from the fog and rammed the Wiedau the foredeck . As a result of the thrust to starboard , the Wiedau turned into the course of the Uwe and cut the barge in half. The skipper was able to save himself by jumping into the Elbe. The Wiedau capsized. Except for a crew member on the back was caught and drowned, about 16 were crew members of Wiedau save. They swam to the nearby bank of Blankenese, where they were taken care of by the residents. The Mieczyslaw Kalinowski suffered only minor damage.

The Uwe was salvaged and scrapped by the Harmstorf salvage company . The stern turned out to be too heavy and was dragged onto the beach on the company premises for further recycling, where it remained after the city of Hamburg bought the premises. The position of the wreck is 53 ° 33 '33 "  N , 9 ° 47' 18"  O coordinates: 53 ° 33 '33 "  N , 9 ° 47' 18"  O .

The wreck is listed as an attraction for geotourism on the website of the city of Hamburg.
