The Wiedau was a cargo ship that capsized and sank in 1975 in a collision with the Polish ship Mieczyslaw Kalinowski and the barge Uwe on the Elbe at the level of the Wittenbergen ferry terminal.

history

Freighter of the common coal trading company (1954–1959)

The ship was built under construction number 466 at the Jos. L. Meyer built in Papenburg . The launch took place on April 3, the delivery on July 14, 1954. The ship was put into service as Heinrich Lorenz . The ship was named after the politician Heinrich Lorenz , who was sent to the supervisory board of the Großeinkaufs-Gesellschaft Deutscher Consumvereine mbh (GEG) in 1894 . The GEG was the parent company of the Schiffseignergesellschaff Gemeinwirtschaftliche Kohlenhandelsgesellschaft .

Freighter of the towing, shipping and rescue company (1959–1976)

In 1959 Heinrich Lorenz was sold to the Bugsier-, Reederei und Bergungs AG in Hamburg and renamed Wiedau .

On December 19, 1975 the Wiedau collided with the Polish freighter Mieczyslaw Kalinowski , capsized and sank. The Wiedau turned by the force of the collision to starboard in the course of the internal vessel Uwe , severing the barge in half. After the salvage by the Bugsier-, Reederei und Bergungs AG, the Wiedau was classified as unworthy of repair in 1976 and sold to Eisen und Metall AG and scrapped.

Ship description

The Wiedau was a full-decker, which was also measured as a shelter decker . As a full-decker it was measured with 1866 GRT , 954 NRT, as a protective decker with 1123 BRT, 486 NRT. The ship was 87.25 m long and 12.30 m wide. The maximum draft as a full-decker was 5.92 m or as a protective decker 4.67 m. The volume of the holds was 4007.7 m³ for bulk goods or 3754.1 m³ for general cargo. The load capacity as a full decker was 3000 t, the load capacity as a protective decker 1960 t. The loading gear consisted of two booms, each with a load of 5 tons, and six booms, each with a load of 3 tons.

The propulsion system of the vessel consisted of two Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz - six-cylinder - Diesel engines of the type RBV 6 M 366 with an output of 1,840 kW at 250 / min, a propeller drives. The ship reached a speed of 14 knots.
