The type Stocznia Gdańska B-438 (Gk B-438) was a series of eleven identical cargo - Quick freighters that from 1973 to 1979 at the Gdansk shipyard (Lenin Shipyard / Stocznia Gdańska) for shipping companies in Poland , Ecuador and Brazil were built . The 20 to 21 knot fast semi-container ships were sold for demolition in India until 2002.

history

The Polskie Linie Oceaniczne (PLO) bought their first four container ships in 1965 to transport fresh beef to England. Two years later the first containers were shipped to North America .

The design "Gk B-438" followed the ships of the types B-444 and B-434 from the Danzig shipyard, which were among the shipyard's first ships for container traffic. The lead ship was on 4 December 1972 laid down on , ran on 10 April 1973 by stack and was delivered on 25 October of that year. The ships are named after the "father of Gdynia " Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski , military officials like Stanisław Popławski and Polish communists who perished in World War II .

The seven ships that Polskie Linie Oceaniczne received were followed by two buildings for Transnave in Ecuador, Isla Santay and Isla Baltra . The Isla Santay was originally commissioned by the PLO and expired on November 12, 1976 even as Aleksander Rylke launched. The last two ships of the type were delivered as Cantuaria and Calandrini to Lloyd Brasileiro in Brazil in 1979 . The concept of semi-container ships proved to be attractive to other shipowners in the 1970s and the shipyard delivered three B-464 and B-469 ships to South American customers between 1976 and 1978.

The vehicles owned by the Polskie Line Oceaniczne were renamed in 1991 after the political change and were given names that began with Ocean . The Ocean Amelia was named back to Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski in July 1992 . The Polish ships were decommissioned by 1998 and abandoned in India.

Incidents

The Mieczyslaw Kalinowski , the second ship in the series, rammed the cargo ship Wiedau in fog on December 19, 1975 . As a result of the collision, the Wiedau and the Uwe inland waterway sank on the Lower Elbe near Wittenbergen . In the accident , a crew member came Wiedau killed. The Mieczyslaw Kalinowski suffered only minor damage.

The Yinka Folawiyo (ex Calandrini ) ran aground on October 8, 1991 near Las Quebrantas in the Bay of Santander and had to be towed free.

description

The quick freighter surveyed with 10,116 GRT and 5640 NRT and had a carrying capacity of 11,680 dwt . They were each equipped with a 6RD90 marine diesel engine from Cegielski under license from Sulzer AG . The vehicles had a bulbous bow , a bow thruster and the loading gear included a 60-tonne cambered heavy-lift boom behind the second loading hatch. Depending on the construction number, different capacities for container transport were specified. These are between 214 and 357 TEU , which were mostly carried as deck load.
