Stanislav Poplavsky ( Russian Станислав Гилярович Поплавский , Stanislaw Poplawski Giljarowitsch ; born April 9 . Jul / 22. April  1902 greg. In Wendytschany , Podolia Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 9. August 1973 in Moscow ) was a Soviet and Polish General, 1944 Commander of the Polish People's Army and between 1947 and 1950 Commander of the Polish Land Forces.

Life

Early military career

Popławski joined the Red Army in 1920 and went through his military career in the Soviet Union . Between 1935 and 1938 he attended the Frunze Military Academy , where he taught tactics until February 1939 . In February 1939 he was first removed from the army on fabricated allegations. Rehabilitated in July 1940, was appointed chief of the operations department of the 162nd Rifle Division in the Belarusian Military District .

In the Patriotic War

After the German attack on the Soviet Union began , Stanislaw initially led the 720 Rifle Regiment on the Western and Kalinin Fronts from July to September 1941 . From October 1941 to January 1942 he was chief of staff of the 363rd Rifle Division (under Colonel Swiridow ), which participated in the Volga sector in the Battle of Moscow and in the offensive operation against Rzhev . For the next four months he commanded the 185th, 256th and 220th Rifle Divisions on the Western Front . In June 1943 he took over command of the 45th Rifle Corps of the Soviet 5th Army (General Krylow ), with which he was involved in the operations between Vitebsk and Orsha during Operation Bagration (June 1944) . After the Soviet troops had retaken Belarus and approached the Vistula , Popławski was appointed leader of the newly established Polish People's Army in August 1944. On September 26, 1944, under Marshal Rokossowski , he became Commander-in-Chief of the Polish 2nd Army as part of the 2nd Belarusian Front . He was promoted to major general on December 3, 1944. From December 19, 1944 to September 10, 1945, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Polish 1st Army . His troops operated in the spring of 1945 under Marshal Zhukov in the association of the 1st Belarusian Front . On March 3, 1945, the troops of the Polish 1st Army reached the coast of the Baltic Sea during the Battle of East Pomerania near Kolberg . After the war he was transferred to Poland as army commander, between 1947 and 1950 he was commander of the Polish land forces , then Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland (1949-1956). He was also a member of the Central Committee of the PVAP and the Sejm . He was promoted to Army General on August 12, 1955. After the Poznan Uprising in June 1956, he was transferred back to the Soviet Union and served in the Soviet Army until his retirement . He retired in 1963, died in 1973 and was buried in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery.

In 1980 his memoirs were published under the book title Combat Companions .
