from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mierle Laderman Ukeles (* 1939 in Denver , Colorado ) is a New York City-based conceptual artist known for her feminist and maintenance-themed artworks.

Life

Ukeles studied history and international studies at Barnard College and later began her artistic training at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 1969 she wrote a manifesto entitled Maintenance Style Proposal for an Exhibition (in about maintenance art proposal for an exhibition ) directed against the role of housewives as a wife in the kitchen and declared himself as a "maintenance-artist". Maintenance, for ukeles, is the field of human activity, keeping things going, like cooking , cleaning and raising children . Her appearances in the 1970s included cleaning art galleries.

One of her best-known projects was Touch Sanitation (1970–1984), including shaking hands with more than 8,500 New York City Department of Sanitation workers and saying thanks, "Thank you for keeping New York City alive."
