Life

Aitsam went to school in Velise , rural municipality Märjamaa , from 1885 to 1893 . From 1900 he worked for various newspapers, for which he wrote not only news but also stories. As a result of his involvement in the 1905 Revolution , he served a five-month prison sentence. He later worked for the Estonian Society of Farmers (1909-1920) and from 1919 in the editorial office of the Päevaleht (until 1940). Then he lived as a pensioner in Vigala.

Aitsam dedicated almost his entire oeuvre to the struggle of the Estonian rural population against the German feudal lords, for which he collected material from contemporary witnesses for decades. Most of his narratives, based on archival materials and eyewitness accounts, appeared as sequel stories in the press. He also published three novels as a book: The novel Vom Schloss auf Hiiumaa nach Sibirien (1937) deals with the legendary pirate Otto Reinhold Ludwig von Ungern-Sternberg , as Herman Sergo later did in his novel The Beach Robber; The King of Estonia (1937) deals with an uprising of 1805; The clergyman's daughter (1940) is a historical novel set in Estonia in the 16th century.

At the same time, Aitsam put together an extensive collection of material on the revolutionary events of 1905, which, however, was not published during his lifetime. It only appeared in 2011 in a richly illustrated and commented edition.

Aitsam also wrote a few plays.
