Mike Muller (engineer)

Arnold Michael (Mike) Muller (born December 1, 1949 in Johannesburg ) is a South African engineer and development specialist .

Life

Muller is an engineer (MSc (Eng)). His 1974 by War on Want published The Baby Killer (translation into German: Nestlé kills babies ) contributed significantly to the Nestlé boycott .

From 1979 to 1988 he was involved in the implementation of state water supply and water treatment projects in Mozambique . Between 1988 and 1994, Muller worked at the Development Bank of Southern Africa in a management position with responsibility for infrastructure programs and related policy.

In 1997 the South African government appointed him to the position of Director-General in the South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry , which he held until 2005. His tasks included the implementation of new policy approaches for the water supply in the country and the reform of existing legislation. In addition, Muller initiated numerous programs and projects to enable many people across the country to have a safe water supply. In this role, Muller was involved in the negotiations with Mozambique and Swaziland , which aimed at the joint use of water resources, which resulted in a trilateral agreement: the Interim Agreement for Co-operation on the Protection and Sustainable Utilization of the Water Resources of the Incomati and Maputo Watercourses ( IncoMaputo Agreement , German roughly: “Provisional cooperation agreement for the protection and sustainable use of water resources in the catchment areas of the Komati and Maputo”). He also led the negotiations for South Africa during the start-up phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project .

From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of the South African National Planning Commission . From 2012 to 2014 he was chairman of the Global Agenda Council on Water Security of the World Economic Forum . Since 2006 he has been visiting professor for public management and development management at Witwatersrand University .

Due to his diverse services and expertise, he became a Fellow of the South African Institute of Civil Engineer (SAICE) and the Water Institute of Southern Africa .

His publishing activities extend to both the popular science and the academic sector.
