Mikumo Shōnosuke ( Japanese 三 雲 祥 之 助 ; born July 19, 1902 in Kyōto ; died August 19, 1982 ) was a Japanese painter in the Yōga style during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Mikumo was born in Kyoto and studied history at the University of Kyoto, which he left in 1924. He traveled through China to Europe and eventually studied graphics at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. There he met artists like Ebihara Kinosuke and Shimizu Takashi. From 1927, and several times later, his works were exhibited in the Paris Autumn Salon . In 1930 and 1932 he painted during a stay in Mallorca and was shown at solo exhibitions in Barcelona in 1932 and 1933 .

After his return to Japan in 1935, Mikumo showed works at the exhibition of the artist society Shun'yō-kai and in 1936 also at the exhibition of the Kokuga-kai ( 国画 会 ). He visited China in 1939 and Java and Bali in 1941 . In 1943 he became a member of the Shun'yō-kai and married the painter Ogawa Mari ( 小川 マ リ ).

After the war, Mikumo showed works at the "Japan International Art Exhibition" ( 日本 国際 美術展 , Nihon kokusai bijutsu-ten ) organized by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper . These included “Paradise Lost” ( 失 楽 園 , Shitsu-rakuen ; 1955), “The Judgment of Paris” ( パ リ ス の 審判 , Parisu no shimpan ; 1957), painted in Picasso style , for which he was presented at the 4th Japan International Art Exhibition 1957 the Kasaku Prize ( 佳作 賞 , Kasaku-shō ), and "Dance of Salome " ( サ ロ メ の 踊 , Sarome no odori ; 1959).

As early as 1951, Mikumo had become a professor of Western painting at the Musashino Art College. When it was upgraded to the Musashino Art School in 1962 until he left in 1974, as chairman of the oil painting department, he was mainly concerned with art education.

In addition to the pictures already mentioned, others are particularly worth mentioning, namely "Woman with outspread arms" ( 腕 を 広 げ た 女 , Ude o hirogeta onna ; 1962), "Resurrection" ( 復活 , Fukkatsu ; 1964) and "Expulsion from music" ( 楽 苑 追 放 , Gakuen tsuihō ; 1967).
