Milada Blekastad

Milada Blekastad (born July 1, 1917 - † October 25, 2003 ) was a Czech- Norwegian literary historian , translator , cultural worker and state scholarship holder.

Blekastad, who comes from Czechoslovakia , came to Norway at the age of 16, where she was a guest of writer Inge Krokann . A year later she married the painter Hallvard Blekastad . Her field of work was extensive, she was particularly concerned with Comenius and the Czech-Norwegian cultural mediation.

From 1957 to 1987 she taught Czech literature at the University of Oslo , where she obtained a doctorate in 1969 with a thesis on Comenius. She also wrote a Norwegian biography on Comenius. She was the translator for Václav Havel , Ivan Klíma , Milan Kundera , Ludvík Vaculík and Karel Čapek . In 1970 she received the Norwegian State Scholarship and in 1969 she received the Bastian Prize for the translation of Ludvík Vaculík's The Ax . In 1997 she was awarded the Czech Medal of Merit and the Prize of the Signatory Group of Charter 77 for her commitment to Czech literature.
