Milan Martić
Milan Martić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Милан Мартић ; born November 18, 1954 in Martići near Knin ) is a former Yugoslav politician and leader of paramilitary associations in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Serbian Krajina during the Croatian War (1991 to 1995) and a convicted war criminal .
Life
Martić was the police chief of the city of Knin before the war. From January 4, 1991 until the Sturm military operation in August 1995, Martić held various positions, including Foreign Minister, Defense Minister and President of the RSK.
Martić, wanted by the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) since July 25, 1995 with an international arrest warrant, surrendered to the authorities on May 15, 2005.
On June 12, 2007, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison by the ICTY. It spoke to him of the murder, the torture as well as the persecution and displacement of Croats and other non-Serbs, attacks on civilians, the willful destruction of civil buildings and other crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war in the so-called " SAO Krajina ”, later renamed the Republic of Serbian Krajina , found guilty on 16 of 19 counts. He was acquitted of the charge of genocide .
ICTY charges
In particular, he was accused of being jointly responsible for the following acts committed by paramilitary groups:
- Murders of hundreds of Croatians , Bosniaks and other non-Serbian civilians including women and the elderly in Kijevo , Dubica, Cerovljani, Bacin, Saborsko , Poljanak, Lipovaca, Škabrnja , Nadin and Bruska in Croatia and in Prnjavor in Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Detention , murder and torture in detention centers in Knin and Korenica
- Holding people under inhumane conditions
- Forced labor along the front line, murders and torture of captured Croats, Bosniaks and other non-Serbs
- Robbery and Torture
- sexual abuse, mass rape of prisoners
- Looting of Croats, Bosniaks and other non-Serb civilians
- Destruction of homes, public and private property. Devastation of cultural assets and church buildings .
- Attack on the city center of Zagreb with cluster bombs from the Hurricane M-87 weapon system . These missiles were fired from Vojnic, 50 km away.
- Expulsion of tens of thousands of Croatians and other non-Serbs from the “SAO Krajina” to areas that were under the control of the Croatian government or to third countries
- Attacks on defenseless Bosniak villages
