history

founding

Even before Milburn was founded, the later band members knew each other through their joint membership in the Sheffielder football club Ecclesfield Red Rose . Joe Green started playing the drums and both Tom Rowley and Louis Carnall learned to play the guitar. The three then made the decision to start a band. At first they wanted to limit themselves to playing songs from their favorite bands. Since the band still lacked a singer and drummer, they persuaded Louis Carnall's younger brother, Joe, to join the band.

Milburn used Joe Green's grandmother's house as a rehearsal room in her early days. They then started playing smaller gigs in front of friends.

The band name is derived from a bet with a friend whose last name was Milburn.

First successes and debut album (2001-2006)

In 2001 the band recorded their first demo titled Steel Town . This was given to anyone interested in her music after performances. The demo included the three tracks Steel Town , High & Dry and Tommy . The cover consisted of a lettering of the band name, which was attached in front of the colors blue and white. With the colors they referred to your favorite football club Sheffield Wednesday .

In 2002 Milburn managed to sell out The Boardwalk in Sheffield twice. Further appearances were at The Cavern Club in Liverpool , The Garage in London and The Leadmill in Sheffield as part of their support for the bands Laika Dog and Cosmic Rough Riders.

They also support the popularity of the Sheffield-based band Arctic Monkeys by letting them play as the opening act for their own performances. In 2005 they also support the Arctic Monkeys on their tour.

After Milburn released the two singles Lipstick Lickin and Showroom under their own label Free Construction, they signed a record deal with Mercury Records in 2006 . With their debut single for Mercury, Send in the Boys , they reached number 22 in the official UK charts in April 2006. Their debut album Well Well Well , which was released in October 2006, reached number 32 on the official UK album charts.

Second album These Are the Facts (2007-2008)

In September 2007 Milburn released her second album These Are the Facts . The first single from the album What Will You Do (When the Money Goes)? ahead. During an appearance on the November tour, a concert in Manchester had to be canceled. The safety precautions were not sufficient, so that it got fans to storm uncontrollably onto the stage.

Dissolution (2008)

On March 28, 2008, Milburn announced that they would break up the band. She reported that there was no major argument between band members and that friends split up. The reason given for the separation was that they wanted to concentrate on new projects. Milburn played two farewell concerts in Glasgow and Sheffield in May 2008 . In addition, the two songs The District Line and Stay at Home were released, which were recorded as part of These Are the Facts , but have not yet been released.

Reunification concerts and third album (from 2016)

The former band members decided to hold four concerts in April 2016 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Well Well Well's release . The shows were sold out within minutes, so it was decided to do a UK tour in autumn 2016. On this tour they wanted to present new songs to the fans, which later led to the release of Midnight Control and Forming of a Fate . The songs were produced in Liverpool by Bill Ryder-Jones.

After the UK tour was also a success for the band, they announced via Facebook in December 2016 that their third album would be released in June 2017. In addition, the song Keep Me in Mind was released.

Side projects

Between the dissolution of Milburn in 2008 and the re-establishment in 2016, the members of Milburn pursued other musical projects. Louis Carnall was now a member of Lords of Flatbush together with former Artic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson and Steve Edwards.

Tom Rowley and Joe Green founded The Backhanded Compliments, which they later renamed Dead Sons. In January 2009, Tom Rowley joined the Sheffield band Reverend and the Makers . However, he gradually withdrew from this in favor of the Dead Sons. In 2013 he accompanied the Arctic Monkeys as a tour member.

In 2009 Joe Carnall founded his own band with ex-Arctic-Monkey bassist Andy Nicholson, which they called Joe Carnall and the Book Club. In January 2012, Joe Carnall also joined Reverand and the Makers. In addition, he has often appeared as The Joe Carnall and & Friends show. He played mostly acoustic versions of old songs with members of friendly bands like The Book Club, Milburn and Reverend and The Makers.
