The milk thistle patch ( Galactites tomentosus ), also Woolly milk thistle spot called, is a plant of the genus Galactites in the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae).

features

The staining of the leaves is characteristic

Galactites tomentosus is a white tomentose , one to two year old hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of growth of (8 to) 15 to 100 centimeters. The leaves are often spotted white, bald on the upper side and have thorns 1.5 to 6 (to 8) millimeters long.

The cups are stalked. The shell is finely haired like a cobweb and has a diameter of 10 to 15 millimeters. The bracts have 5 to 10 millimeters long, greenish thorns. The outer flowers are funnel-shaped, sterile and have a more intense purple color than the inner ones. The inner flowers are tubular and hermaphroditic. The bottom of the basket is densely hairy. The fruits are 3 to 5 millimeters in size and yellowish. The pappus is three to four times as long as the fruit.

The flowering period extends from February to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20 or 22.

Occurrence

Galactites tomentosus occurs in the Mediterranean region eastwards to Rhodes . It rarely occurs temporarily in Central Europe. In the Azores it is a neophyte, in the Canaries its originality is questionable. The species grows on fallow land , ruderal sites and pastures. In Crete it settles at altitudes from 0 to 650 meters.

Taxonomy

The milk thistle patch was in 1753 by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum under the Basionym Galactites Centaurea L. first published . Conrad Moench established the genus Galactites in 1794 and renamed the milk spot thistle to the replacement name Galactites tomentosa Moench , because the genus name and specific epithet of plants must not be identical. The International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants specifies masculine as the grammatical gender for all genus names ending in “ -ites ”, so Galactites tomentosus is the correct name. Another synonym based on the same type is Lupsia galactites (L.) Kuntze ; Galactites pumilus Porta and Centaurea elegans All are based on other type material . (1780) and Galactites elegans (All.) Soldano . This name would be the actually valid name because of the epithet elegans published in 1780 . However, in 2005 a conservation application was made in favor of Galactites tomentosus , which was approved by the Nomenclature Commission in 2007.
