Milena Pires (full name: Maria Helena Lopes de Jesus Pires; born June 19, 1966 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is a politician from East Timor . She is a member of the State Council , Senior Policy Advisor to the Vice Prime Minister for Planning the Country’s Administrative Reform , Asia Policy Officer of the Catholic Institute for International Relations (CIIR) and an advisor on victims of torture and traumatized people. Pires has been the Permanent Representative of East Timor to the United Nations since 2016 .

During the Indonesian occupation, Pires' family went into exile in Australia when Milena was nine years old. Milena Pires grew up here and studied sociology and English literature. Since 1989 she was active in the East Timorese independence movement.

From 2001 to 2002 Pires was a member of the Constituent Assembly and Vice-President of the National Council during the UN administration of East Timor by UNTAET . After that she was a member of the national parliament for the Partido Social Democrata PSD during the first legislative period , but she gave up her mandate for the post at UNIFEM. In 2002 Pires was campaign manager for Xanana Gusmão when he successfully ran for the office of president . Pires' husband, Zacarias da Costa, was the general manager of the campaign team. Between 2002 and 2007, Pires was Country Program Coordinator for UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) and was responsible for rebuilding the UNIFEM office in East Timor and starting the program in the country. On August 27, 2007, Pires was elected a member of the State Council by the National Parliament. From 2007 to 2008 she was Justice Coordinator for the 2008 National Report. From 2008 to 2009 Pires worked for the Asia Foundation in the Justice Facility Program .

In 2010, Pires was elected as an expert on the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women . She was a member from January 1, 2011 to 2014. From 2013 to 2016 she was a founding member of the Center for Women and Gender . She then worked as chief political advisor to the Minister of Commerce and chief advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister in the field of state administration.

In 2016, Pires was appointed Permanent Representative of East Timor to the United Nations by President Taur Matan Ruak . The accreditation took place on April 12, 2016.

Pires holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New England , Australia . She speaks Tetum , Portuguese , English and some French and Spanish . She is a member of various organizations for the defense of women's rights, such as the East Timorese women's network Rede Feto Timor Lorosae and the board of directors of the Alola Foundation . Here she is also considered an authority outside her country. She wrote several articles on the subject in various books and international magazines. One of the main problems Pires is addressing is the widespread domestic violence in East Timor.

family

The elder of Pires' brothers died in the 1999 Suai church massacre . His body was never found. Milena Pires is married to Zacarias da Costa , the former Foreign Minister of East Timor, and has a son with him named Hali Zachary .

Milena Pires is the granddaughter of Manuel Jesus Pires .
