Miles Joseph Berkeley (born April 1, 1803 in Biggin Hall , Northamptonshire , England , † July 30, 1889 in Sibbertoft near Market Harborough , Northamptonshire) was an English clergyman and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Berk. ".

Live and act

Berkeley studied theology in rugby and at Christ's College , Cambridge, and in 1825 received a bachelor's degree in the philosophy faculty at Cambridge University . Then he was curate in Apethorpe , from 1833 in Wood Newton and from 1868 in Sibbertontoft . In 1857 Berkeley was elected as a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

In addition to his spiritual activities, he was a zoologist and botanist and did research mainly in the field of mycology . Above all, he has made a contribution to the biology and ecology of mushrooms and has significantly shaped the terminology of mushroom science. In addition, he researched not only the fungal flora of England and continental Europe, but also those of non-European regions. The term " fungology " goes back to him.

In his series of articles " Decades of fungi " (1844–1856), mushrooms from different parts of the world are presented and many new species are described.
