Mill River is a river in New Haven County, Connecticut . Like many other rivers, it is named after its former use (sa Mill River (Fairfield, Connecticut) , Rippowam River ).

geography

The river begins in the Town of Cheshire , near the Cheshire Hillside Cemetery (Wallingford Road) and runs steadily to the south, for a long distance parallel to the Quinnipiac River , which later flows with it into the New Haven Harbor of Long Island Sound . The South Main Street No. 10 (later Whitney Avenue ) runs largely parallel. The river passes through the Bartlem Recreation Area and takes south of Cook Hill Road to Pine Brook from the left and east, where he protected landscape DeDominicis Preserve happens. Shortly afterwards it receives a tributary from the right (west) of Willow Brook , which was also an old connection to the Farmington Canal . Next, from the left (O), Butterworth Brook joins the Butterworth Brook Reservoir . The Mount Carmel forms a natural barrier that is transverse to the course of the river. therefore the Eaton Brook also flows from the right and south-west of the narrow gorge . After breaking through the hill, the river passes the Quinnipiac University site . In the area of the city of Hamden it still receives inflow from numerous small streams, whereby the Quinnipiac River is already moving in close proximity for the first time. In the flat country bis the Shepard Brook flows in from the west and at Augerville and Mather the river is dammed again to Lake Whitney . The area is under nature protection as Lake Whitney Open Space and the New Haven Country Club is in the neighborhood . The East Rock ( East Rock Park ), already in the New Haven area, forms a natural separation from the Quinnipiac ( Quinnipiac River Marsh ) and after about one kilometer the river forms the small island of Ball Island , before it comes to Wooster Square , opposite the The Annex district flows into New Haven Harbor. The site is spanned by the Interstate 95 bridge. The river has a length of 17.4 mi (28 km). The Lake Whitney serves the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority as a water reservoir.

The popular Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden and East Rock Park by Lake Whitney in Hamden are popular places to visit, as well as fishing and hiking. The USGS (United States Geographical Survey) has had a level measuring station (gauge 01196620) near the Sleeping Giant for over 40 years.

A hiking trail is currently being designed.

The lower reaches of the river is a tidal system of fresh water as tide gates near State Street in New Haven keep the outflow in rhythm with the tides. This section of the river is being studied for research purposes.

English Station , an abandoned power station, is located on Ball Island in the estuary.

history

A first flour mill was built in 1642 on a fortified Quinnipiac settlement near East Rock . In 1780 there were already eight mills. The river later also supplied power to Eli Whitney's arms factory, now the Eli Whitney Museum .

environmental Protection

In 2018, a plan for the protection and restoration of the Mill River Watershed (catchment area) was developed. Save the Sound and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) are working together on the project.

The project is monitored by a group of volunteers.
