Eduard Riggenbach
Eduard Riggenbach (born September 18, 1861 in Basel ; † October 4, 1927 there ) was a Swiss Protestant theologian and university professor .
Life
family
Eduard Riggenbach was the son of the businessman and bailiff Albert Riggenbach (1822–1906) and his wife Marie Henriette (1824–1919), daughter of the businessman and banker Johann Jakob Iselin (1794–1874). His brother was the astronomer and politician Albert Riggenbach (born August 22, 1854 in Basel; † February 28, 1921 there), married to Valerie, daughter of the businessman Daniel Burckhardt. He was also a nephew of the architect Christoph Riggenbach and a great-nephew of the architect Achilles Huber .
He had been married to Helene (1860–1927), daughter of the President of the Basel Criminal Court, Johann Heinrich Eduard Thurneysen (1824–1900), since 1889. They had a daughter together:
- Helena Riggenbach (* 1897 in Basel), married to the archaeologist Ernst (1867–1926), son of the painter Ernst Stückelberg .
education
Riggenbach attended high school (today: Gymnasium am Münsterplatz ) in Basel and was a theology student at the Basler Predigerschule from 1880 to 1885 and at the University of Basel from 1885 to 1888 .
Career
After his exams and ordination in 1885, he taught at the Preacher's School from 1887 to 1902, and from 1888 to 1889 in the Basel Mission House .
In 1891 he became a licentiate in theology and completed his habilitation in 1892.
From 1899 he was associate professor and from 1917 full professor of theology at the University of Basel.
He was also a member of the Basel Synod.
Scientific work
Eduard Riggenbach, who was completely blind from 1876, worked scientifically as a church-positive New Testament scholar who was influenced by the revival movement and turned against liberal exegetical criticism. His most important work was his commentary on the Letter to the Hebrews , published in 1913 .
