Index Theologicus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Index Theologicus (IxTheo) is an international, academic open access bibliography for theology and religious studies . The Theologicus index comprises scientifically relevant information across time and media from the Middle Ages to the present. The editors are the University Library of Tübingen as well as the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Tübingen and the Catholic Theological Faculty of Tübingen .

history

In 1975 the Theology Magazine Content Service (ZID) was founded in Tübingen. This was an international and interdenominational current content service that printed the tables of contents of the most important journals subscribed to in the Special Collection Area (SSG) Theology ( UB Tübingen ) . The monthly ZID booklets had registers of authors, biblical references and persons, which were accumulated in an annual and five-year register.

Since 1997, subject indexing has been promoted by the Association of Dioceses of Germany (VDD). The ZID also took over the evaluation of certain magazines that were evaluated by the Catholic Religious Education Documentation Center (Munich) until 1995.

In 1995 the ZID was converted to a database based on allegro-C , in which the bibliographical data of the journals evaluated were electronically recorded, held and used as the basis for printing the issues. At the turn of the year 1995/1996, the database showed more than 22,000 articles from approx. 480 journals and selected commemorative publications. Just two years later there were around 67,000 articles from almost 600 journals and well over 200 commemorative publications. The bibliographical information contained in the older, conventionally produced booklets was almost completely recorded retrospectively.

In addition to the subject indexing with standardized keywords, a facet classification (IxTheo classification) consisting of 13 main groups and 139 classes was introduced in 1995 .

The database was initially offered in the form of installable floppy disks and later as CD-ROM . From 1997 to 2001 the University Library of Tübingen sold the database directly; from 2002 to 2006 it was published by the Mohr-Siebeck publishing house in Tübingen .

At the end of 2000, the print version of the ZID was discontinued. In 2002 the database was renamed Index Theologicus .

Since 2007 the database has been available exclusively online and free of charge.

today

In 2011, the University Library of Tübingen decided to develop the IxTheo into a comprehensive bibliography for theology and religious studies in which, in addition to essays, monographs and other relevant sources are listed. For this purpose, since 2013, all new titles in the Southwest German Library Network (SWB) have been cataloged. After completing extensive preparations for the migration, around 550,000 titles were migrated from the former IxTheo Allegro database to the SWB in March 2016.

Since 2015, the IxTheo has been further developed in terms of technology and content as part of the Specialized Information Service (FID) Theology with funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The new IxTheo is a modern, multi-faceted discovery system on the technical basis of VuFind . In order to structure the more than 2 million titles in the IxTheo, professional entry points for individual sections, subjects and special collections of theology will be available in the future. The search can be carried out in nine languages: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, Russian and Chinese (traditional / simplified).

The evaluation of magazines is constantly being expanded through semi-automatic production processes.
