Millennium Village (Welthungerhilfe)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Millennium Villages are 15 places in poor countries where Welthungerhilfe wants to show that the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) can be achieved. The concept is analogous to the United Nations Millennium Villages.

Action

In 2006, Welthungerhilfe selected a village, a small region or a district in Latin American, Asian and African countries. The participating countries were Ethiopia , Angola , Benin , Burkina Faso , Madagascar , Mozambique , Rwanda , Afghanistan , two in India , Cambodia , Tajikistan , Bolivia , Ecuador , Nicaragua .

The people there should identify their most urgent needs and develop a development program together with Welthungerhilfe . You should receive special funding based on the principle of helping people to help themselves . This should, if possible, improve their standard of living by 2010 so that one or more Millennium Development Goals can be achieved. The focus was on the first objective "Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger".

The second part of the initiative began in 2011, involving both some of the existing Millennium Villages and some new ones. The goals of this part ran until 2015. In autumn 2012, Welthungerhilfe listed the following locations as Millennium Villages:

  • Africa
    • Ogur (Uganda)
    • Kongoussi (Burkina Faso)
    • Nentaraja (Kenya)
    • Mabote (Mozambique)
  • Asia
    • Kanat Toch (Cambodia)
    • Korak (Nepal)
    • Sarwan (India)
    • Nimpith (India)
    • Jhiranya (India)
    • Veshab (Tajikistan)
  • Latin America
    • Ayacucho (Peru)
    • Riberas del Huallaga (Peru)
    • Mondésir (Haiti)
    • Poirier (Haiti)
    • Auhya Pinhi (Nicaragua)

Monitoring

Welthungerhilfe used the MDGs set by the United Nations as well as the corresponding targets and indicators as the basis for its monitoring at village level in order to achieve acceptance among the international specialist public on the subject of the Millennium Development Goals. The observation period extended over the years 2006 to 2010 with the main aim of gathering information about the current situation in the Millennium Villages and the development trend with regard to the MDGs. This information should be recorded regularly and promptly and processed in such a way that it can be used efficiently for both project management and public relations work . In 2006 the methodology was discussed and developed. In addition to discussion rounds and workshops on content, procedure, feasibility, etc., a pretest was also carried out at all 15 locations in order to be able to experience and incorporate the specifics and restrictions of each location.

In the wake of the global poverty crisis, Welthungerhilfe published figures on its initiative in September 2010. The annual household surveys in the villages show that some key figures have changed positively. This includes the answer to the question of whether the household has enough food all year round:

Millennium Village Yes (2007) Yes (2009)
Mangue, Angola 29% 87%
Sodo, Ethiopia 1 % 7%
Mabote, Mozambique 6% 47%
Kanat Toch, Cambodia 9% 19%
Gandhiji Songha, India   21%
Veshab, Tajikistan 45% 71%

According to Welthungerhilfe, the number of children enrolled in school has also increased. This increased from 2007 to 2009 in Mangue (61% to 81%), in Gandhiji Songha (81% to 86%) and in Sarwan (93% to 97%). In Mabote 2007 there was clean drinking water for 62% of the respondents. In 2009 this was 89%. In Sodo the share rose from 28% to 71%.

Final report

Welthungerhilfe has drawn a positive conclusion after ten years. Despite many adversities, all but one of the villages have developed positively. Settlements in rural areas that were not affected by armed conflict were specifically selected. However, political unrest has broken out in Mabote in Mozambique and measures have had to be stopped.

Welthungerhilfe sums up that the majority of the 72,000 people living in the Millennium Villages are doing much better today than before the initiative began. Together with the villagers, it was possible to reduce extreme poverty and hunger, promote equality for women, reduce soil degradation and protect the environment.

In addition to activating the village communities and jointly determining the development goals, Welthungerhilfe sees mutual visits by representatives of the Millennium Villages as an essential reason for the success of the overall project. Through these mutual visits across local and national borders, people would have got to know successful practices, for example in vegetable growing, much faster than would have been possible through training in seminar rooms.

In the final report of the project, specific key figures are documented for the 14 Millinnium Villages.

Other voices

The Hanns Seidel Foundation , which is close to the CSU, reports that villagers involved in the project in Kenya have doubts about the sustainability of the measures. The Millennium Goals would be achieved better in the project than in the rest of the country, but the financial means could be lacking after the project was completed to be able to maintain the infrastructure. However, it is unclear whether this criticism refers to the Millennium Village of Welthungerhilfe or the Millennium Villages of the United Nations, which are also described there, or to both projects.

The time for school uses the Millennium Village Sarwan in India to describe the importance of equality for women.

The Austrian Standard writes very positively about the Millennium Village Korak in Nepal and reports on the construction of water pipes and toilets.

In 2014 EinsPlus showed the documentary Ethiopia Calling , which reports on the well construction in Sodo (Ethiopia) and the reliability of the well technology from the minute 48:25.
