Milnerton is a district ( main place ) of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the South African province of Western Cape (Western Cape). It is located north of the core city of Cape Town .

geography

Milnerton is located around eleven kilometers north of the center of Cape Town on the Atlantic Ocean on Table Bay . In 2011 it had 95,630 inhabitants. The lagoon Milnerton Lagoon is formed by the river Diep River. The Woodbridge Island peninsula formed by the lagoon is connected to the district by a wooden bridge, which is a national cultural heritage, but is closed due to dilapidation. The 21 meter high Milnerton Lighthouse has stood on Woodbridge Island since 1960 . Table Mountain can be seen from the beach . To the north are the districts of Table View and Bloubergstrand . To the west lies Robben Island in the Atlantic .

history

Milnerton was founded in 1897 and named after the then High Commissioner for Southern Africa and Governor of the Cape Colony , Lord Alfred Milner . According to other sources, the place was founded in 1902 on the Biesjeskraal farm. With the connection to the railway network in 1904 by the Milnerton Railway , the place experienced an upswing; In 1954 the line was closed. From 1955 to 1996 Milnerton formed its own congregation, which included Table View, among other things.

The main line of business is tourism; Milnerton is also a popular place to live.

The R27 trunk road runs parallel to the coast through Milnerton from Cape Town in the south to Velddrif in the north. The Motorways M5 and M8 also perform Milnerton.

Car races are held at the Killarney Motor Racing Circuit .
