Milton Pentonville Allen

Sir Milton Pentonville Allen OBE ( June 22, 1888 , † September 17, 1981 ) was governor of Saint Christopher, Nevis and Anguilla from 1969 to 1975. He was from Saint Kitts and worked as a journalist and politician before he was appointed governor.

Life

Allen was born in Palmetto Point , Saint Kitts. He was the son of a stonemason and began his training with a tailor in Basseterre before he decided to emigrate to the United States . He made his home in New York City and became a leader in the West Indian community. Among other things, he organized financial support for the newly formed Saint Kitts Workers' League (a predecessor organization of the Labor Party ). After more than 25 years in America, Allen returned to Saint Kitts in 1935 and worked as the editor of various Labor movement magazines.

Allen was elected to the Legislative Council of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla in 1958 , but resigned in 1962 to relinquish his seat for Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw , a West Indies Federation minister . He only resumed his seat after the dissolution of the Federation and served as "Minister without Resort" for one term before being elected "Speaker". He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 1964 .

Governorship and Later Life

In 1969, after the resignation of Frederick Albert Phillips , Allen was appointed provisional governor of the islands. On the occasion of the "1972 New Year Honors" he became a Knight Bachelor for beaten knights and led from then the name suffix "Sir". and later in the year he received a permanent appointment as governor. Thus, he was the first native of Saint Kitts to get into this position. Allen was in office until the spring of 1975 when he retired and was replaced by Probyn Ellsworth Inniss . He died in JN France General Hospital in September 1981 at the age of 93.

Allen was married to Annie Locker from 1937 .
