Probyn Ellsworth Inniss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Probyn Ellsworth Inniss MBE (born November 18, 1936 , St. Kitts , British Leeward Islands , † March 12, 2017 ) was the last governor of St. Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla from 1975 to 1980 and, as a result of the separation from Anguilla , the governor of St. Kitts and Nevis from 1980 to 1981.

Life

Inniss was born in St. Kitts , where he began his education before going to the University of the West Indies , from which he graduated in 1961. He initially worked as a teacher, then went to England to Jura to study and became a lawyer as a member of the Middle Temple . On his return to St. Kitts, he entered the civil service and was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in June 1967 .

governor

In August 1975, Inniss succeeded Milton Allen as governor of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla, then a West Indies Associated State of the United Kingdom . In connection with this role, he was named a Knight Bachelor in the 1976 New Year Honors , and was personally invested by Queen Elizabeth II in July of that year . There have been three big changes during his tenure. Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw , Paul Southwell and Lee Moore , and Kennedy Simmonds served as prime ministers in various states at the time . In 1981 Inniss refused to give the Royal Assent to a law passed in the Simmonds government. He thought it was unconstitutional. Thereupon Simmonds asked Elizabeth II in writing to withdraw the appointment as governor, which also took place in November.

Next life

After his tenure, Inniss returned to the legal profession and founded his own law firm. He has also written books on the history of St. Kitts, particularly the history of Basseterre and the Saint Kitts and Nevis Labor Party .
