The mimicry filefish ( Paraluteres prionurus ), also known as the black saddle filefish , is a representative of the filefish (Monacanthidae) that can reach a maximum length of ten centimeters and which in shape and color imitates the poisonous saddle-headed puffer fish ( Canthigaster valentini ).

distribution

It lives in coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to South Africa , Japan , the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia at depths of 1 to 25 meters.

mimicry

To resemble the saddle-pointed pufferfish, the mimicry filefish has a broad shape that is atypical for filefish, is much more colorful than most other filefish, does not change its color and usually keeps the strong first dorsal fin spine characteristic of the family hidden in a fold of skin. The filefish, harmless in itself, benefits from the toxicity of its model, which is avoided by predatory fish. It is relatively rare, there is a maximum of five filefish for every hundred pufferfish, and is mostly alone in the vicinity of saddle-pointed pufferfish. The imitation of an inedible animal by harmless animals to deceive enemies is known as Bates' mimicry .

Another largely unknown species of the genus, Paraluteres arqat , mimics the pufferfish ( Canthigaster solandri ).
