Ellen Thaler

Ellen Thaler-Kottek is an Austrian zoologist and behavioral scientist .

Life

She studied zoology and psychology at the University of Innsbruck . From 1978 to 1994 she was the deputy director of the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo . She was also a curator for birds. Afterwards she was an associate professor for ethology and zoo biology at the University of Innsbruck, Department of Ecology and Limnology.

Her main focus was on ornithology and was involved in various projects for the reintroduction of captive species such as the bald ibis ( Geronticus eremita ).

Since 1989 she has been studying the behavior of coral fish in nature and in the aquarium . She went on study trips to the Red Sea , the Seychelles and Malaysia . Her research focuses on the ability to change sex in most marine perch-like fish and the ecological phenomena symbiosis and mimicry .

Ellen Thaler publishes regularly in the aquarium trade journals DATZ , KORALLE and "Der Meerwasseraquarianer".
