Mšeno (German: Mscheno , later Wemschen ) is a town with 1476 inhabitants (September 12, 2005) in okres Mělník in the Czech Republic . It lies on the edge of the Daubaer Schweiz in the headwaters of the Košátecký potok and is today mainly characterized by tourism and small industry.

history

Town hall in Mšeno

Mšeno is first mentioned in 1306 at the foot of a castle. In 1352 Hynek Berka von Duba received the city from Wenceslaus II as a gift. In the 16th century, handicrafts and trade are reported to have flourished, and the city enjoyed rich privileges at that time. During the Thirty Years War the city is plundered by the Swedes and Saxons.

In a major fire in 1867, 54 houses, including the town hall and the church, are destroyed. At the end of the 19th century, various small businesses developed and the town was connected by local railways to Mělník ( Melnik ), Mladá Boleslav ( Jungbunzlau ) and Chotětov ( Kuttenthal ). A settlement of larger industrial companies does not take place, however, so that Mšeno retains its character as a small country town.

After the Sudetenland was ceded to the German Empire in 1938–45, Mšeno became a border town. At the end of the Second World War , partisan units such as the Avengers of the Nation were operating in the vicinity of Mšeno .

After 1945 economic development stagnated, and recently tourism has been promoted. In 2003 the city center was given the status of a monument protection zone.
