The Melnik – Mšeno railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated as part of the state-guaranteed Melnik – Mscheno local railway . It runs on the edge of Daubai Switzerland from Mělník to Mšeno .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The concession for the Melnik – Mscheno local railway was granted on January 18, 1896. The line was opened on June 22, 1897 together with the branch line to Střednice. The operation was carried out by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) on behalf of the owners.

In 1912, the local railway's timetable showed two passenger trains and two mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains, two of which were connected to Junbunzlau and Alt Paka. They needed more than an hour for the 24-kilometer route.

On January 1, 1925, the private local railways were nationalized and the line was integrated into the ČSD network.

The use of modern motor trains in the mid-1930s resulted in a significant reduction in travel times. The winter timetable of 1937/38 recorded five pairs of 3rd class passenger trains that ran as motorized trains. The journey time on the Mělník – Mšeno route was only 42–46 minutes.

During the Second World War , the route lay entirely in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . The operators were now the Protectorate Railways Bohemia and Moravia (ČMD-BMB). On May 9, 1945, the entire line came back to the ČSD.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

The 2008 timetable provided for a total of seven daily pairs of passenger trains over the entire route, which ran at approximately two-hour intervals . Some of the trains were tied through to Lomnice nad Popelkou .

Due to the poor condition of the route, a speed limit of 10 km / h had to be set up on some longer route sections on September 15, 2014. Since then, passenger train traffic has been handled by rail replacement traffic. The repair of the damage was planned for the second quarter of 2015. In March 2015 it was announced that the repair of the line would be delayed until the end of 2015. The route operator SŽDC finally planned a complete reconstruction of the route. The budget was calculated to be CZK 500 million in total .

On December 13, 2015, traffic was resumed with six pairs of trains a day.

Vehicle use

Class 810 railcars at Mělník station (2010)

In the first years of operation, the operation was carried out with light, triple-coupled tank locomotives. In addition to the kkStB 262 procured by the ÖNWB , the typical Austrian local railway locomotives of the 178 and 99 series of the kkStB were also used.

Today, rail traffic is handled exclusively with class 810 railcars and their modernized variant, class 814 "Regionova".
