history

The area of the city was already settled during the Stone and Bronze Ages. The first written mention of the old village Kostelec on the left bank of the Elbe on a trade connection between Brandeis and Melnik comes from the year 1276. There was a Přemyslid fortress on the Elbe , which Ottokar II Přemysl left to Boresch von Osek in 1276 . After Boresch's death, Kostelec fell back to the Přemyslids and belonged to Queen Elisabeth . Later it came into the possession of the Crown of Bohemia .

It is believed that King Ottokar II Přemysl established a town south of the village on the other side of the Mlýnský potok, which was first mentioned in 1317 as the oppidum "Kostelecz in littore fluminis Albe". The center of the town was a triangular market square, in the middle of which the Church of St. Vitus ( Kostel svatého Víta ) was built, which was elevated to a parish church in the 15th century. In 1323 the town was owned by Hynek Berka von Dubás , who, together with his brother, the Prague cathedral provost and owner of Rudeč, Hynek Žák von Dubá , had a bridge built over the Elbe and received the bridge toll from King John of Bohemia .

In 1424 Kostelec was besieged by Jan Žižka and the allied Prague army. In 1448 Kuneš Rozkoš von Dubá acquired the town. Five years later Heinrich Berka von Dubá became the owner of Kostelec and the widow Queen Johanna von Rosental bought the property from him . The existence of a municipal school has been documented since 1465. In 1486 King Vladislav II granted Kostelec city rights.

In 1551 and 1727 several city fires broke out and during wartime the military occupied the city. After the Battle of White Mountain , the imperial invaded and a hundred years later it was the French who occupied the city in 1743. Kostelec belonged to the Brandeis rule since 1648. The Russians and Austrians invaded from 1756 to 1763.

After the replacement of patrimonial Kostelec was assigned to the political district of Brandeis in 1850. In 1863 Kostelec received city lighting. The sugar factory was built between 1868 and 1873. With the start of traffic on the route of the Brandeis local railway on the Elbe – Neratowitz from Neratovice to Kostelec, the city received a railway connection in 1899.

From the 19th century until the end of the Cold War , Elbekosteletz or Kostelec nad Labem was a garrison town.
