Teresa Stolz (Czech: Tereza Stolzová ; born June 2, 1834 in Elbkosteletz ; † August 22, 1902 in Milan ) was a Czech opera singer ( soprano ). She took part in many first performances of Giuseppe Verdi's works and had been close friends with the composer since 1869.

Life

Teresa Stolz was the younger sister of the twins Franziska (Fanny) and Ludmilla (Lidia) Stolz (both born in 1827), who were also singers. After studying singing at the Prague Conservatory and from 1856 in Trieste with Luigi Ricci and Milan with Francesco Lamperti , she made her début at the Italian Opera in Tbilisi as a soprano in 1857 . After appearing in Russian theaters and in Constantinople , she sang on many Italian stages. In the course of her career, her path took her across Europe.

After her success as Giovanna d'Arco at La Scala in Milan in 1865, she sang Elisabetta in the Italian premiere of Don Carlos . The conductor Angelo Mariani (1821–1873) judged in 1868 after her portrayal of Amelia in Un ballo in maschera : “The scope and beauty of her voice, the art of modulating her, her empathy for the music and her vocal skills - everything is perfect, sublime. ”Mariani got engaged to the singer that same year.

Verdi and Teresa Stolz probably met for the first time in 1867 during the performance of Don Carlos , but at the latest in 1869 during the rehearsals for the first performance of the new version of La forza del destino . After visiting Verdi's Sant 'Agata estate near Busseto several times, the singer separated in 1871 from Mariani, who had long been a close friend of Verdi, but with whom Verdi had fallen out.

Teresa Stolz soon became a Verdi specialist and celebrated triumphs especially in his late operas, such as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera and the title role in Aida . After 1872 she sang almost exclusively in works by Verdi.

In 2003 the asteroid (48794) Stolzová was named after her.

Relationship with Verdi

It remains uncertain whether Teresa Stolz was just a muse or whether she had a love affair with Verdi. From Giuseppina Verdi's notes it appears that there was a marital crisis because of Teresa Stolz. She added a snappy comment to a letter from Teresa Stolz from August 1872: “Sixteen letters !! in a short time!! What an activity! ”. During a marriage conflict, Giuseppina is said to have moaned: “Either this woman leaves the house or I go”, whereupon Verdi yelled back: “This woman stays or I'll shoot myself.” Although Verdi carefully shielded his private life from the public, rumors soon arose that Verdi and Teresa Stolz had a relationship, launched by a malicious newspaper article in the Rivista Indipendente from September 1875.

In June 1876, Teresa Stolz began an engagement in Russia. When she returned to Italy in March 1877, she announced her resignation as a singer. Her last public appearance was on June 30, 1879 in a benefit performance of Verdi's Messa da Requiem at La Scala in Milan . Even after her resignation, she remained friends with Verdi.

Teresa Stolz remained unmarried throughout her life. After the death of Verdi's wife Giuseppina in November 1897, Teresa Pride was often on Verdi's Sant'Agata estate and accompanied the composer on several trips. She only survived the composer by a year and a half.
