history

The area of the community was already settled in pre-Christian times. The Vliněves sand pits in particular are considered to be rich archaeological sites.

Byerzkowicz was first mentioned in a document in 1318 as the property of Jarosius de Byerzkowicz. Later the village of Vychna of Velenec belonged to the Kaplirz de Sulewicz . In 1452 the Vladiken von Šebířov acquired the fortress. From then on, the family was called Beřkovský von Šebířov . In 1597, Nikolaus Beřkovský sold the eleven villages of Beřkovice to the Meissen nobleman Sigmund Wilhelm von Bellwitz and Nostitz . In 1606 he had the water fortress redesigned into a renaissance castle.

Dolní Beřkovice Castle

After the Battle of the White Mountain , the property of the Lords of Bellwitz and Nostitz was confiscated in 1622 and sold to Polyxena von Lobkowicz in 1627 as thanks for their loyal service and in particular the granting of support and shelter for the defenestrated imperial governors Jaroslav Borsita von Martinic and Wilhelm Slavata . From then on, the rulership belonged to the Raudnitz line of the princes of Lobkowitz .

Since 1785 the name Dolní Beřkovice was used to distinguish it from the nearby place of the same name . In the first half of the 19th century, Josef von Lobkowitz founded the Lower Berschkowitz line of the family, the seat of which was the Dolní Beřkovice Castle. In 1853, Josef von Lobkowitz had the palace rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by the Viennese architects Heinrich von Ferstel and Stoch.

After the abolition of patrimonial Dolní Beřkovice formed a municipality in the Mělník district from 1848 . In 1858 Franz Horsky founded the Fürstl. Josef v. Lobkowitz sugar factory in Unterbeřkowitz, Franz Horský . Since 1890 the sugar factory had a daily capacity of 7,000 quintals of beet, making it one of the largest in Bohemia. In the second half of the 19th century, the Lobkowicz family founded a malt house and brewery. Between 1903 and 1907 two weir systems were built near Dolní Beřkovice in the Elbe. In 1910 the district Podvlčí, which had previously belonged to Křivenice, was added to the municipality. From 1938 to 1960 the castle housed a community school, later a primary school.

In 1948 the Lobkowicz family was expropriated. In 1961 Vliněves was incorporated. After the Velvet Revolution, the palace returned to Marie Julie, Princess von Thurn und Taxis- Lobkowitz, in the 1990s . The castle was badly damaged by the Elbe floods in August 2002 . Reconstruction measures have been ongoing since then.
