The monastery Mindrölling ( Tib . Smin gling grol ) or Ugyen Mindrölling ( Tib . O rgyan smin grol gling ) is the largest Nyingma Monastery in Central Tibet . It is the founding monastery of the Mindrolling tradition , a sub-school of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism .

It is located in Zhanang County (Dranang) in Shannan Governorate in Tibet . The monastery was founded in 1676 by Terdag Lingpa Gyurme Dorje ( Tib . : gter bdag gling pa 'gyur med rdo rje ; 1646–1714), the teacher of the 5th Dalai Lama Ngawang Lobsang Gyatsho and 1st Minling Trichen lineage holder .

The monastery dates back to an older sacred site from the end of the 10th century. During the Dsungareneinfälle in Tibet in the 18th century it was destroyed later by the Chinese. It was rebuilt.

The 12th Minling Thrichen Rinpoche ( smin gling khri chen rin po che ) (throne holder of the monastery) Künsang Wanggyel ( tib kun bzang dbang rgyal ); 1930–2008 lived in exile in a branch monastery in Dehradun , India .

The two main lineage holders of Mindrölling Monastery are Minling Thrichen and Minling Khenchen . The monastery gave birth to many side monasteries.

The Mindrölling Monastery in Zhanang has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-765) since 2006 .
