The Shechen tradition ( Tib . : zhe chen ) is a branch of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism . Along with Kathog , Pelyül , Dzogchen , Mindrölling , and Dorje Drag, Shechen is one of the so-called “six large seats” of the Nyingma.
Shechen Monastery
The founder of the Shechen tradition is Rabjam Tenpe Gyeltshen (tib .: rab 'byams bstan pa'i rgyal mtshan ; 1650–?), A disciple of the 5th Dalai Lama , who is also known as the 1st " Shechen Rabjam " (tib .: zhe chen rab 'byams ) became known. The 2nd Shechen Rabjam Gyurme Künsang Namgyel (Tib .: 'gyur med kun bzang rnam rgyal ; 1713–1769) then founded the Shechen monastery in Dêgê , Kham in 1735 .
The Shechen monastery was the starting point for the establishment of 160 other monasteries of this tradition and, due to its importance, was quickly counted among the "Great Seats of the Nyingma". The parent monastery and 110 of the secondary monasteries were destroyed in the 1950s. The Shechen monastery itself has since been rebuilt. In India , a monastery in exile was established in Bodhgaya , the place where Buddha Shakyamuni attained enlightenment . There is also an important exile monastery of this tradition at the Bodnath Stupa in Kathmandu / Nepal.
Teacher
The Shechen tradition has produced many great Buddhist masters, including the Shechen Gyeltshab , the Shechen Kongtrül, and Mipham Rinpoche. Also Dilgo Khyentse and Chogyam Drungpa were instructed in the teachings of this tradition. The tradition instructs in all the classical teachings typical of the Nyingma tradition. Among them, the teachings on Dzogchen , the "great perfection" have an outstanding meaning.
